Sea Scout Ship Viking – Named 2026 National Flagship

Sea Scout Ship Viking (#100) of San Francisco, California has been named the 2026–2027 BoatUS–Sea Scout National Flagship by Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) and Scouting America. This prestigious honor recognizes one of the top Sea Scout units in the nation and highlights excellence in leadership, seamanship, and community service.

What Is the Sea Scout National Flagship?
The Sea Scout National Flagship is awarded annually to a unit that best represents leadership, maritime skill, teamwork, and service. Ship Viking was selected based on:
• Exceptional youth leadership development
• Strong advancement and training programs
• Extensive on-the-water experience
• Active community engagement

A Model Program for Youth Leadership
Chartered by the San Francisco Sailing Whaleboat Association, Ship Viking includes 34 Sea Scouts, including 13 new members recruited in the past year. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and consistent sailing opportunities on San Francisco Bay.

Outstanding Advancement and Training
In 2025:
• 8 Scouts earned Apprentice rank
• 4 Scouts advanced to Ordinary rank
• 4 Scouts achieved Able rank
Additional training included:
• First Aid and CPR certification
• Lifeguard certification
• 17 Scouts completed NASBLA Boater Safety Course
• Leadership training through ILSS
Extensive Sailing Experience
Ship Viking completed a two-week cruise from San Francisco Bay to the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, visiting ten destinations. Scouts sail weekly and participate in kayaking and small-boat sailing.
Statewide Impact
Ship Viking participates in major events including:
• SeaFarers’ Regatta
• Old Salts Regatta
• Ancient Mariner Regatta
• Wente Sea Scout Weekend
• Safety at Sea
• Napa Mini Regatta
• Southwestern Rendezvous
A notable achievement included a Scout selected to sail aboard the USCGC Barque Eagle.

Community Service and Growth
Ship Viking supports:
• Cub Scout rain-gutter regattas
• Summer maritime day camps
• Launch of Sea Scout Ship #707 in Vallejo
• Service projects with local organizations
• Volunteer service during San Francisco Fleet Week

A Legacy of Excellence
This marks Ship Viking’s third National Flagship recognition (2016–2017, 2023–2024, and 2026–2027).
