The Golden Gate Area Council is proud to celebrate the near completion of the Herms Dog Patch Cabin Project at Camp Herms — a transformational rebuilding effort that has restored and modernized one of the camp’s most important camping areas for future generations of Scouts and families.
Following the devastating winter storms of 2023, the original cabins at the Dog Patch campsite were severely damaged and ultimately lost. In response, the Golden Gate Area Council launched an ambitious multi-phase rebuilding project to completely reimagine and rebuild the site into a modern, accessible, and durable camping destination that will serve youth across the Bay Area for decades to come.
Today, that vision has become reality.
A Complete Transformation at Camp Herms
What was once a storm-damaged campsite has now been transformed into a nearly completed collection of seven brand-new cabins, including one fully ADA-accessible cabin designed to provide greater access and inclusion for all Scouts and visitors.
The Dog Patch renovation project also included:
- Two upgraded and expanded shade structures
- Refreshed bathrooms and shower facilities
- New exterior pathways and decking
- Modern roofing, siding, windows, and doors
- Interior electrical infrastructure
- Enhanced accessibility improvements
- Site grading and landscaping enhancements
Once the final interior work is completed — including lighting, interior walls, bunks, and final electrical connections — Scouts will once again be able to fully enjoy overnight camping experiences in this revitalized area of Camp Herms.
A Community-Powered Scouting Project
The Herms Dog Patch Cabin Project became possible through the collaboration of dedicated volunteers, contractors, local businesses, labor unions, and community partners who donated countless hours, materials, expertise, and support to help bring this vision to life.
Project Timeline and Key Phases
The rebuilding effort progressed through multiple phases beginning in 2023:
- Removal of damaged structures and site clearing
- Pier layout and drilling coordinated by Mark Weyland and Sean Martin
- Concrete pier installation and shade structure pad expansion with donated labor and materials from Dolan Concrete
- Framing efforts supported by the Carpenters Union, Channel Lumber, and JA Design and Construction
- Full framing, sheathing, truss installation, and roof preparation
- Roofing completion through donations from ABC Roofing Supply and Western Sierra Roofing
- Installation of discounted windows and doors supplied through Dolan’s Lumber
- Exterior siding and trim installation
- Interior rough electrical installation by JA Design and Construction
- Exterior painting of cabins and Dog Patch bathroom facilities
- Construction of front porch decking and pathway improvements completed by volunteers
- Interior paneling supplied through discounted materials from MacBeth Hardwoods and installed by JA Design and Construction
Final Remaining Work
While the project is substantially complete, several final improvements remain before the cabins officially open for use:
- Connecting cabins and shade structures to permanent electrical service
- Installing the ADA concrete ramp and accessible parking area
- Completing final lighting, outlets, and city inspections
Investing in the Future of Scouting
The rebuilt Dog Patch campsite represents far more than new buildings. It is an investment in the future of Scouting throughout Northern California — creating a welcoming, safe, and modern outdoor environment where youth can build leadership skills, strengthen friendships, and experience the adventure of Scouting.
For generations to come, these cabins will help support camping programs, outdoor education, family events, leadership development, and unforgettable memories at Camp Herms.
On behalf of the Golden Gate Area Council, thank you for making a difference for our youth and supporting the Camp Herms Cabin Project. We are excited to complete this effort and open the new cabins for Scouts to enjoy.
